About Jake

Jake Greene completed over 30 years of Federal service during which he invested over 20 years in the human resources management field, and another 10 years in professional forestry. Jake’s last federal human resources position Regional Employee Relations Branch Chief with the US Fish and Wildlife Service, Department of the Interior, where he directed the labor and employee relations program and provided advice to supervisors and managers on disciplinary and performance-based actions, training and employee development, and ethical behavior. He held a similar position with the New Mexico State Office of the Bureau of Land Management, DOI, where he also handled staffing assignments.

Jake held the position of Personnel Officer for the Cibola and Santa Fe National Forests, US Department of Agriculture, where he managed a variety of functions including, staffing, placement and recruitment, position classification and pay administration, labor and employee relations, employee development, and personnel action processing. At other times Jake was Regional Classification Specialist, Labor and Employee Relations Specialist, and held other human resources management positions with the Forest Service. He represented the USDA at hearings before the Merit Systems Protection Board and the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, and drafted final Agency decisions in discrimination cases for the Undersecretary of Agriculture. Before he moved into the human resources management game, Jake held a number of forester positions, including small timber sales officer, timber sale preparation and appraisal officer, and recreation forester, over the course of eight years. He began his Federal career as a Peace Corps volunteer forester in Niger, West Africa where, for two and one-half years, he surveyed national forest boundaries and counted animal populations. He and Douda Adamou, his host country counterpart, initiated the first land management planning effort in West Africa. Jake also taught fence building and land surveying methods to Nigeriens, and principles of arid land forestry and dendrology to incoming volunteers.

Jake earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Forestry and Conservation from University of California, Berkeley, a Master of Public Administration degree from California State University, Fresno, and a Certificate in Management from the Sid Craig School of Business, CSU, Fresno. He also holds a degree from the School of Life, having worked as a printer-pressman in a paper mill, and as a sheet metal worker for a semi-truck manufacturer and an electrical cabinet company. These days, Jake lives outside Santa Fe, New Mexico in a straw bale house he and his wife, Susan, built themselves. He is a past member of the Santa Fe Fiction Writers Group, and continues to write in his spare time.
